Teen charged with arson

A Covington teen was arrested and charged with arson after a fire broke out Christmas Eve in a Project Adventure house on Spring Street, causing the evacuation of all the home's residents to another facility.

Firefighters received the call of a residential structure fire about 8 p.m. Dec. 24. The fire, which started in an unoccupied bedroom, was put out by the sprinkler system.

"Upon observing where the fire was at, we felt it was somewhat suspicious," said Assistant Fire Marshal Tony Smith.

CPD personnel and Covington Police Department officers interviewed the residents of the house. One of the occupants, a 17-year-old male, was arrested and booked into the Newton County jail for a felony charge of arson in the first degree - a charge that carries with it a $15,000 bond.

The residents of the Spring Street facility were moved to the Project Adventure house on Elks Club Road. The fire damage was confined to the unoccupied bedroom, but the house sustained water damage, said Smith, and the power was cut off to the Spring Street house until utility personnel could check the safety of the house.
