Eagles lead Newton Cup

The Eastside Eagles boys and girls golf teams found themselves at the top of the rankings this week after the first round of the Newton Cup.

The Eastside boys hold a 14 stroke lead over Alcovy after posting a team opening round of 165, while the Tigers finished second overall with an opening round 179. The Newton boys trail with a first-round score of 243.

The Lady Eagles fared just as well in the opening round, finishing 10 strokes ahead of the Lady Tigers with a 159. Alcovy shot 169 in the first round, while the Lady Rams finished 33 strokes back of the Lady Eagles with a 243.

Eastside boys coach Jay Cawthon said he hoped the Eagles’ excellent first round carries over to the final round of the Newton Cup next week.

“Very proud of the guys for posting their best score of the year,” Cawthon said. “I hope this gives us some momentum heading into the second round of the Newton Cup and for the region tournament.”

 The Eagles Quin Murphy led Eastside with a 36, while teammates Jack Mitchell and Tyler Dysart each posted rounds of 42. Jack Mitchell rounded out Eastside’s top four scorers with a round of 45.

Alcovy’s scoring contingency also joined Eastside with all players scoring under 50. The Tigers Andrew Cochran led Alcovy with a 41, while Matt Lovell (43), Zach Floyd (46) and Hunter Clark (49) joined Cochran by breaking 50.

Myles Shivers led the Rams with a (59), while Riley Dameron (60), Blake Brinkley (61) and Brendan Brown (63) rounded out the rest of the Rams’ scoring.

Whiten leads

Spring may have just sprung, but it was Eastside’s Autumn Whiten that led the girls’ opening round in the Newton Cup, pacing the field with an opening round 48.

Teammates Sidney Roule (54) and Alexis Allen (57) joined Whiten to help Eastside claim the top spot after the tournament’s first round with a team score of 159.

Alcovy’s Kelsey Knights followed just five strokes behind Whiten with a 53, while Kaitlyn Doerin (57) and Emily Moore (59) helped the Lady Tigers secure the tournament’s second place position.

Paris Little (60), Ashton McKinnon (66) and Ashley Weesner (66) posted Newton’s best scores of the first round.

Eastside will have to fight off Alcovy and Newton for the Newton Cup championship next week in the event’s final round on April 15 in an 18-hole match play round at the Oaks Course.
