Alcovy succumbs to Lady Cougars

Alcovy's Taylor Crews clears a ball out of the backfield in the Lady Tigers' 6-0 loss to Newnan Monday night.

Five second-half goals surrendered by the Lady Tigers’ defense led to a non-region loss Monday night at Sharp Stadium for the Alcovy girls soccer team, as the Lady Tigers fell 6-0 to visiting Newnan.

Alcovy trailed 1-0 at the half, but gave up a trio of scores in the first 10 minutes of the second period against the Lady Cougars.

Newnan added a pair of scores in the final 20 minutes, including a goal with just 1:57 remaining on the clock, and Alcovy was unable to get into a flow offensively, spending much of the game on its heels chasing the Lady Cougars’ scorers.

Alcovy was without defensive leader McKenzie Rowland, who sat after being ejected last week against Newton, and played without midfielder Katie Barton for much of the first half after suffering an injury in the opening period. Though Barton returned in the second, she was forced to sit with a yellow card for the final 36 minutes of play, and Alcovy coach Anna Hebert said her line-up woes caught up with the Lady Tigers.

“We had a few people out of positions and had to play kids that hadn’t played defensive positions before in our backfield,” Hebert said. “That wore us down. In the second half, we were a little more tired than they were and you could see it. It’s something we have to learn from and rebound from quickly.”

Down by a goal at halftime, Alcovy was never able to put an offensive attack together in the second half, finishing the period without a shot on goal.

Newnan, meanwhile, kicked its offense into another gear, needing just three minutes to score their first goal of the second half. Alcovy was unable to clear a ball from its defensive third after a goal kick and the Lady Cougars took advantage. Newnan won the loose ball and sent a cross from left to right, finding Erin Bright, who connected with the left corner of the net for the score.

Bright found the back of the net again two minutes later, scoring once more after an errant Alcovy goal kick in almost a mirror of her first goal, extending Newnan’s advantage to 3-0 with 35:36 remaining.

Newnan capped off its flurry of goals at the 33:03 mark, this time scoring after the Lady Tigers failed to clear a ball out of their defensive in. Rebecca Turner won the ball and from 30-yards out sent a high-sailing strike to the goal, landing the shot over Alcovy’s keeper’s head for the score.

Fifteen minutes went by before the Lady Cougars’ offense struck again, this time off a throw-in. Newnan sent the throw in through the heart of Alcovy’s defense into the penalty box. No one controlled the ball and after a few bounces, Hannah Thomas sent a shot to the goal that bounced under keeper Victoria Marchant, who dived to her right for the save.

The score gave Newnan a 5-0 lead with just over 18 minutes to go, but the Lady Cougars weren’t done scoring yet.

With 1:57 remaining on the clock, Amber Whatley netted Newnan’s final score, hitting the left corner of the net perfectly for the 6-0 final.

Thomas scored Newnan’s first-half coach, giving the Lady Cougars a 1-0 lead at the break before their second-half onslaught.

Alcovy will have a few days to rebound before facing region foe Druid Hills on Friday.
