One EB lane on I-20 to be closed next week

The state will continue construction work on I-20 in Newton County next week with workers switching to work on the eastbound side.

The far right lane on I-20 traveling eastbound in Newton County will be closed from Sunday through Thursday between mile markers 92 (the Alcovy Road exit) and 95, which is in between the Ga. Highway 11 and Ga. Highway 142 exits.

The Georgia Dept. of Transportation is rehabbing two bridges on the interstate over Alcovy River and over the Alcovy River Overflow, including milling and doing asphalt on the shoulder.

Transportation department spokeswoman Cissy McNure said a flagman may be used for this work and asked motorists to use caution, reduce their speed and be alert to changing traffic conditions in work zones.

The state worked on the shoulder on I-20 heading westbound this past week.

The work is part of a $6.7 million federal project consisting of bridge rehabilitation on Interstate 20/State Route 402, McNure said.

The project was let to construction August 2013 and has a contract completion date of June 30, 2014; Tyrone-based Massana Construction was awarded the project.
