Oxford's 175th anniversary

Oxford’s 175th anniversary

We’d like to wish Oxford a happy birthday, and join in its celebration of 175 years of people, places and memories.

The city will soon be putting up 175th anniversary banners, and it will host special events throughout the rest of the year to mark the occasion. We couldn’t be happier to help share the sights and sounds of this special time, as well as look back on all the city has been through in its 175 years.

Every year Oxford celebrates the Fourth of July in grand fashion, with dozens of floats marching through town.

This year, things get amped up as the city celebrates its 175th anniversary. The Fourth of July Parade will be the focal point, with a theme of patriotism and 175 years of Oxford. A $300 prize will be awarded to the best float.

The parade is just one of several ways the city is celebrating its milestone.

The year ends with a convocation in December, featuring former District Superintendent, Council Director and member of the North Georgia Conference, Dr. Herschel Sheets.

The year-long celebration will also feature book readings by Oxford authors and about its history. The city itself is creating a storybook and is asking residents to send in stories so it can compile a collection of personal remembrances.

The city is also accepting photographs relevant to Oxford and its history for a 175th anniversary calendar.

All these things will be great ways to honor a long past and look to a bright future.

Happy birthday, Oxford.
