Oxford seeks to fill vacant planning commission seat

Property for road project exchanged for sewer taps

Oxford mayor Jerry Roseberry and the Oxford City Council are seeking to fill a vacancy on the municipality's planning commission.

Planning commission member Forrest McCanless, who has served on the board since 2006 and who was replacing Emma Lou Harris in her term, will resign from his position effective Dec. 31. A new member will be appointed at the Oxford City Council's annual organizational meeting, held 7:30 p.m. Jan. 5 in the Oxford community room.

There are typically six members on the planning commission. According to Oxford City Clerk Carol Poole, members normally serve three-year terms. The commission addresses topics such as zoning setbacks and reviews developmental permit applications. The planning commission advises the mayor and council on zoning issues and can also approve building permits, which then go before the county for final approval.

Planning commission member Vivian Harris, who completed a term for Charles Green from 2006-2008, is expected to remain in her position for another term. According to Poole, Harris will more than likely be reappointed at the January council meeting.

Oxford community members interested in the vacant planning commission seat should contact Oxford City Hall for more information at (770) 786-7004.

In other Oxford news, resident Curtis Jackson has agreed to give up a property located at the intersection of Emory and Moore Streets. The 200 square feet of the northeast end of the property is necessary for a two-lane street widening project, as per the Georgia Department of Transportation. In exchange for the land, the city of Oxford has agreed to provide Jackson with two sewer tap-ins for properties he owns on Haygood Avenue. The cost of one sewer tap in Oxford is roughly $3,600. The Moore Street widening project is set to begin in 2009.
