CPD arrests two after road signs reportedly taken

Two men were arrested late last week after reportedly trying to steal a street sign.

A report said an officer with the Covington Police Department responded to a burglary alarm at the Royal Palace Chinese restaurant on U.S. Highway 278 Friday just before 1 a.m. After checking the building, the officer noticed some males walking west on Old Atlanta Highway.

According to the report, it was approximately 20 degrees outside, and due to the alarm going off and the temperature, the officer decided to see what they were doing.

As he drove toward the males in his patrol car, they reportedly took off running, crossing over the railroad tracks and heading into the woods toward Eberhardt Street.

The officer dispatched additional officers to the area.

One of the officers located Ryan Patrick Bigg on Berry Street and another one of the males, Brandon Learenworth, was found near Applebee’s. According to the report, Learenworth was sweating and had a hammer in his pocket. When the two males were asked why they were running, Learenworth said they weren’t running, but were scared because they were walking on the railroad tracks.

When one of the officers told them that they weren’t on the railroad track, Learenworth then stated that they ran because they stole an Emory Street sign and threw it down by a storage trailer when they ran off.

Police officers found that the sign was missing from the intersection of Emory and Echols streets. Learenworth and Bigg were arrested and charged with criminal trespassing and loitering and prowling.

School trailer entered

A trailer at Porterdale Elementary School reportedly was broken into by an unknown person last weekend. A deputy patrolling the school on Monday spoke with a school employee, who said her school trailer had been damaged and broken into between Jan. 31 and Feb. 3.

The employee said nothing was missing from the trailer.
