Mr. Dan L. Strawbridge

Meadows Funeral Home

Dan L. Strawbridge of Oxford, died suddenly Feb. 4, 2014, after a brief illness. Born Aug. 23, 1943, Mr. Strawbridge is survived by his wife of 30 years, Nancy Sharpe Strawbridge, and sons, Dodson Daniel Strawbridge, John Wilson Strawbridge, and William Gerald Strawbridge.

Other surviving family members include brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Sharon Sharpe; nieces and nephews, Callie and Coty Smith, Jason and Stephanie Belew, Jodi Baker, Jennifer Baker, and Anniston Butler; aunt and uncle, Joe and Rebecca Pollock; and cousins, Jane and Mike Santi, Brian and Kelli Pollock, and Philip and Dana Pollock. He was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis Jean Strawbridge Jensen; father, Roy Fravel; grandparents, Gerald White and Ethel White Burt; and his wife’s parents, Wilson and Dorothy Sharpe.

Mr. Strawbridge was a graduate of Arizona State University, receiving graduate and undergraduate degrees in music education. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War as a musician playing trumpet for diplomatic functions in Central and South America.

Mr. Strawbridge’s career in education spanned 40 years of teaching and serving as a school leader in private and public schools in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. Most recently he taught music in the Walton County Public Schools and served as principal and interim headmaster for The Gatewood School in Eatonton. At the time of his death, Mr. Strawbridge was the choir director for Rutledge United Methodist Church, a small, country congregation that was dear to his heart.

Mr. Strawbridge had many interests. Among them was soccer, which often had him as the biggest, distinctly recognizable voice in the crowd. He was never short on enthusiasm when it came to cheering his boys on or cheering for his favorite team, Manchester United.

His love of music and enthusiasm for soccer were surpassed only by his love of God and his devotion to his wife and sons.

Those wishing to honor his memory may make gifts to the Music Fund at Rutledge United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 373, Rutledge, Ga. 30663 or Bassett Hound Rescue of Georgia, P.O. Box 680322, Marietta, Ga. 30068.
