Precious Price led Newton with 25 points in a 60-45 win over Woodland.

The Lady Rams varsity basketball team continued its dominant run Saturday night, earning its seventh consecutive victory with a 60-45 win over visiting Woodland in non-region action.

The final score didn’t fit the first-half script, as Newton struggled to put the Lady Wolfpack away. Woodland kept the score close through the opening three quarters, but Newton’s second-half push allowed the Lady Rams to outlast Woodland in the fourth quarter.

“I think we did a good job coming off the four-day break,” Newton coach Tiffani Johnson said. “We did a good job coming ready to play today.”

Senior Precious Price showed why she’s one of the most well-rounded players in Region 2-AAAAAA in the win, putting up 25 points against the Lady Wolfpack.

Price used her aggressive play on the offensive end to get to the basket and finish, while teammate Deandra Reed added 13 points in the winning effort.

Woodland was led by senior guard Mecca Sneed, who finished with 20 points in the loss.

Newton’s start couldn’t have been better, as the Lady Rams used a 13-2 run to take an early first-quarter lead. Six points during the run came from forward Sonia Forney, but the Lady Wolfpack answered Newton’s early charge, regaining momentum midway through the period.

Trailing by 11 after Newton’s opening run, Woodland trimmed the lead to seven after the first quarter.

Woodland started the second quarter on a 12-4 run, gaining its first lead of the game in the middle of period. Both teams exchanged leads from that point on, but it was Woodland that took a 28-26 advantage into halftime.

The Lady Rams came out in the second half ready to compete, flipping the switch on offense fueled by Price’s big second half. Price scored 14 points in the second half and nine points in the third quarter alone, helping Newton turn a halftime deficit into a 33-31 lead midway through the third quarter Newton added to its slim lead with a 12-6 run to finish off the quarter, taking an eight-point lead into the final period.

Newton held the Lady Wolfpack to eight points over the final eight minutes, outscoring Woodland 15-8 for the 15-point win.

The Lady Rams put their perfect region record on the line this week, competing in four region contests against Morrow, Rockdale County, Druid Hills and Luella.
