Church creates 'bags of blessings' for homeless

Helping the homeless has become an important part of the mission work at Alcovy United Methodist Church, where members put together 100 bags of supplies this week to hand out in Atlanta Friday.

The bags include tarps, blankets, stocking caps, gloves, Bibles and food that can easily be eaten cold. Members also plan to hand out 100 sandwiches, according to Lil McDaniel, a member of the church’s mission team.

"Arlin Hodges, our mission chairman, had a dream. After our church was able to fill 32 large bags with supplies for the homeless in the latter part of 2013, he made a New Year’s resolution to fill 100 bags," McDaniel wrote on Facebook. "Although it seemed like an impossible task so soon after the first delivery, our church got behind him and things began to happen."

The group met Wednesday and Thursday to put the bags together and make the sandwiches and is meeting at 9 a.m. Friday to hand out the "Bags of Blessings" in Atlanta.

"Arlin’s dream was really God’s mission: Tell the homeless that God has not forgotten them and that He cares!" McDaniel wrote.

Alcovy United Methodist is located at 12521 Alcovy Road, Covington. For more information about the event, visit the church’s Facebook page. For more on the church, call 770-786-0610 or visit alcovyumc.com.
