Newton blindsides Lady Eagles

Newton's Imani Broadnax breaks down the Lady Eagles' defense for an easy layup.

It was a jam-packed house at Newton High on Saturday evening, the crowd that only Newton vs. Eastside can draw.

The Lady Eagles did no flying in this game. They were shot down by the Lady Rams, as Newton dominated Eastside in all aspects of the game. The game was pretty much over at halftime, as the Lady Rams defeated Eastside 67-39.

Newton’ star seniors Precious Price and Sonia Forney played a huge role in the win. The two have been playing varsity basketball since their freshman year, and they showed their experience in a big-time county rivalry. Price had 13 points in the game, including three 3-pointers. Forney added 12 points.

“We maintained our energy the whole time,” Newton Head Coach Tiffani Johnson said. “Knowing that we won last time gave us the confidence that we can do it again.”

The Lady Eagles were led by Zaria Barton with nine points; Adriana Spears had eight points in the game. Eastside trailed by as much as 35 points and was outhustled by the Lady Rams throughout the night. The Lady Eagles gave up plenty of second-chance points and had a host of turnovers that didn’t help their cause.

“Right now, we’re just going through a funk,” Eastside coach Matthew Jackson said. “We kind of hit a wall, and we've got to break through.”

Eastside did keep it close in the first quarter, but the Lady Rams started off the game on a 7-0 run. They had the momentum from then on and never let it go. Newton went into second quarter up by only seven points, but would break the game open from there. It started off with a Price three-pointer and then back-to-back three-point plays from Forney. Newton went on a 12-2 run in the second quarter and was up by 16 points at the half.

Newton came out not ready to let up in the second half, scoring a total of 36 points in the second half, and holding Eastside to only 24 points. The Lady Rams went to the end of their bench and still were able to add to the lead and finish off the game.
