New Leaf apartments available for rent

Apartments are being snatched up at the recently-opened New Leaf Center, but there were still 21 one-bedroom units available as of early Tuesday.

The $3 million apartment complex and workforce development center, located in the Walker’s Bend neighborhood off Washington Street, has apartments at or slightly below market prices, with a one-bedroom apartment costing $550 a month.

"People love (the apartments); they are open and spacious (and) have great floor plans," said Shamica Redding, who helps to manage the center. Redding said the apartments have new appliances and come with washers and dryers. "Traffic has been non-stop since we began advertising Wednesday."

The center is operated by the Covington Housing Authority, but the apartments are not rent-subsidized and the income requirements are flexible, as a single person can make up to $55,750 and a family of four can make $79,600 and qualify. Only 25 percent of the apartments are set aside for low-income residents (up to $33,150 for a family and $23,250 for a single person).

Applications can be picked up from the center, 6147 Avery St., Covington. Stop by or call 770-728-6065 for details. All of the center’s two-bedroom apartments have been rented; they cost $650 apiece.
