Man arrested after Christmas Eve gunfire

A man was arrested on Christmas Eve after allegedly firing a gun in a home during a family gathering.

Inv.estigator Michael Cunningham with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office said Jeremy Travis, 27, of Covington was arrested and charged with a list of charges, including aggravated assault Tuesday.

A report from the NCSO said a deputy was dispatched to an address on Bramble Bush Trail around 9 p.m. in reference to an assault.

Once on scene, the deputy talked to a female victim who said her boyfriend, Travis, pointed a gun at her brother during an argument and then pointed the gun toward the floor and shot one round.

The incident reportedly happened in front of several children and other adults.

"There were a lot of people in the home. I don’t know the specific number, but they were at a family gathering. An argument ensued between two males. The boyfriend pointed a gun at the victim and also discharged one round into the floor of the home," Cunningham said.

"After being warned that they were going to call police, he then ran from the home."

According to the report, Travis was located at another residence down the street.

Travis was charged with eight counts of aggravated assault felony under the Family Violence Act; possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime; firearm possession by a convicted felon; firearm use by a convicted felon during the commission of a crime; 12 counts of aggravated assault; and 12 counts of cruelty to children.

The firearm and witness statements were placed into evidence.
