Increased patrols planned on New Year's Eve

Local authorities will be upping patrols this New Year’s Eve in an attempt to crack down on drunk driving in Newton County.

According to an analysis by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, half the fatal crashes that occur on New Year’s Day involve drunk driving, and it is also the most hazardous day of the year for pedestrians.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office will have increased patrol presence in the county, though it currently does not plan to use roadblocks.

The Covington Police Department will also increase patrols and officer visibility on New Year’s Eve, but also has no plans for roadblocks in the city.

The city of Oxford plans to have an increased presence of law enforcement throughout the city.

Porterdale law enforcement could not be reached for comment.

If you suspect someone is driving drunk, call 911.
