Are you ready for a TUBACHRISTMAS?

While some may be dreaming of a white Christmas, Porterdale is tuning up for another TUBACHRISTMAS.

The fifth edition of the holiday celebration will be at 3 p.m. Dec. 8, and this year it will serve as the inaugural event for Porterdale’s newly renovated open-air concert space, the Porter Memorial Gymnasium.

The historic gym, built in 1938, caught fire Oct. 20, 2005. Walls and the center of the roof collapsed into the facility. Even though a $10,000 reward was offered, the cause of the fire was never discovered. The community rallied to convert the ruins into a space for open-air concerts and special events.

Because the stage is not yet completed, TUBACHRISTMAS will perform "in the round" this year.

In early November, downtown Porterdale was transformed into a 1940s Texas town for the filming of a new movie version of the Tony-nominated Broadway play, "Trip to Bountiful." TUBACHRISTMAS will rehearse in a space that became a bus station for the film.

Registration will be from 1-2 p.m. Sunday in Porterdale City Hall. The cost is $10 (as set by national guidelines).

The rehearsal will be from 2-3 p.m. in the "bus station’’ space, followed by the performance at 3 p.m. in the newly renovated gym.

Carol books, hats and scarves will be for sale, and those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
