Teen found shot

A deputy with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office found a 16-year-old with gunshot wounds Saturday.

The deputy responded to Gross Lake Parkway around 9:30 p.m. after receiving reports about shots fired in the area. While en route, dispatch notified the deputy that someone had been shot. The deputy found a teen male lying on the ground. The victim said he had been shot twice — in the leg and in the back.

NCSO Investigator Michael Cunningham said the teenager was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center. The case is under investigation, he said.

"We are still soliciting any information regarding this case. And, if anyone has information, they can give us a call at the Newton County Criminal Investigation Division at 678-625-1400," Cunningham said.

Spouses arrested after argument

Cunningham said deputies responded to a home on Fieldstone Lane Saturday morning around 6:30 a.m. in reference to a domestic dispute.

Cunningham said Tanya John, 40, reported that her husband, Corey John, 33, pointed a gun at her. Cunningham said it was determined that there was "mutual combat," and both parties were arrested. There were no details about injuries.

Cunningham said the husband was arrested on aggravated assault charges, and the wife was arrested on charges of battery and interfering with a 911 call.

Dad reports bruises

A man reported to a deputy with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office that his child had bruises after he was reportedly hit with a belt.

An NCSO deputy spoke Sunday with the man, who said he found a bruise on his son’s buttocks and right hip area.

The man said when he asked his son about the mark, his son stated that his "mom’s girlfriend whipped him with a belt."

While there, the report said, the deputy reportedly saw the bruised areas on the child. An investigator and a representative from the Department of Family and Children’s Services were contacted.

NCSO Investigator Michael Cunningham said the case is an active investigation.
