Oxford planning year-long birthday bash

The City of Oxford has begun work on plans for one of its biggest projects ever, the 175th birthday celebration for the historic city in 2014.

The city has developed several committees, all with different responsibilities, in order to make the year-long birthday celebration one for the record books. It also has created a Facebook page to keep residents updated on what’s happening in the city, and to allow people to share their memories of Oxford and its history.

The steering committee will hold its final event in the fall of 2014 at Old Church, though the date is not yet set, and depends on the schedule of the keynote speaker, Dr. Herchel Sheets.

The Fourth of July committee is working on a float for the city’s annual parade, while another committee is identifying historical sites within the city and working to put together a walking tour booklet. Also, a list of 175 of Oxford’s most influential citizens is being compiled.

The Oxford College design department has been working on banners for the birthday celebration, and has presented several options to the committee.

The steering committee’s next meeting is set for 3 p.m. Dec. 4 in the community room of city hall. The hope is that there can be several different events throughout the year, with the parade and the fall celebration being the largest.
