Dr. Charles Samuel Frady, husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and mathematician, passed away on November 13, 2013. Born on September 30, 1937, in Sylva, N.C., to Sarah and Ellis Frady, and one of 11 brothers and sisters,Charlie began life with meager circumstances. At the age of 3, Charlie was stricken with polio, but this tragic diagnosis turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Instead of dropping out of school to work in the town mill, Charlie was able to finish high school, and thus began his journey toward higher education.

As a beneficiary of the race to put a man on the moon (via a National Science Foundation scholarship), he earned a bachelor of science degree from Western Carolina University and later a Ph.D. in mathematics from Auburn University. He spent the bulk of his career as an educator and administrator at Georgia State University. His love of knowledge (“that’s the one thing no one can take away from you”) was boundless and inspirational.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Myra Frady; daughter, Marsy (and Matt) Mechling; son, Bobby (and Robin) Frady; daughter, Rebecca (and Don) Garman; and son, Todd (and Vicky) Williams; grandchildren Morgan, Chloe, Parker, Ashtyn, Charles Dakota, Mateo, Sebastian and Soledad; mother-in-law, Mary Arnwine; brothers, Roy, Howard, Johnny, Eugene, and Richard Frady; and Winston, beloved furry friend and companion. He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Willa Mae and Mary Elizabeth; and his brothers, Claude Ellis Jr., Asbury and H.L. Frady.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 19 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree St. N.E., Atlanta. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Auburn University scholarship fund at www.auburn.edu/giving, or a gift in memoriam to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at www.stlukesatlanta.org.
