Edwards shines against Wolfpack

The following is an update on former Newton County high school players and their on-the-field performances during the 2013 season:

DeVon Edwards, Alcovy – Edwards and the Duke Blue Devils earned their seventh win of the season this past Saturday, downing rival N.C. State 38-20.

Edwards was named the National Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Foundation for his efforts in the win.

The redshirt freshman grabbed a pair of interceptions in the final four minutes against the Wolfpack, returning both interceptions for scores of 25 and 45yards.

Edwards also returned a kickoff 100 yards, setting school freshman records for the longest kickoff return, highest return average (49.33) and most points scored (18).

Edwards and the Blue Devils return to action this Saturday at home at 3:30 p.m. against Miami.

Akeem Hunt, Newton – Hunt and the Purdue Boilermakers dropped their seventh consecutive game of the season last Saturday to Iowa on Military Appreciation Day.

The Boilermakers fell 38-14 at home, falling to 1-8 overall on the season and 0-5 in Big 10 play.

Hunt gained nine yards in the ground on seven carries in the loss, while grabbing seven catches for 63 yards.

The junior also returned one kickoff for 20 yards, ending the game with a team-high 95 all-purpose yards.

Hunt and the Boilermakers return to action this weekend for a noon contest on the road at Penn State.

Sheldon Rankins, Eastside – Rankins and the Louisville Cardinals earned their eighth win of the year Friday night against Connecticut, defeating the Huskies 31-10 on the road.

Rankins recorded a pair of solo tackles in the win, as the Cardinals’ defense held the Huskies to 237 yards of total offense.

Louisville returns to action this Saturday at 7 p.m. against Houston at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

D.J. Hill, Newton – Hill and the Virginia Cavaliers dropped their seventh consecutive contest this past Saturday to the University of North Carolina in the South’s Oldest Rivalry game.

UNC downed the Cavaliers 45-14 for their fourth consecutive win in the series.

Hill played, but did not record a tackle in the loss for UVA.
