Byron H. Dunn

Byron H. Dunn, M.D., died Nov. 15. He graduated from Gordon Military School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia. After an internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla., he served a three-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Georgia. He practiced in Dekalb County for 20 years before moving his office and practice to Conyers for 15 more years. He was a member of the Dekalb Medical Society and the Newton-Rockdale Medical Society. He was on staff at Dekalb Medical Center, Crawford Long Hospital, Rockdale Medical Center and Newton Medical Center. He served as Chief of Staff of Rockdale Medical Center and as head of the Obstetrical Department. He was a member of the American Medical Association, The Southern Medical Association, The Medical Association of Georgia and the Atlanta OB-GYN Society. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, certified in 1964 and re-certified in 1978. He was an Emeritus Member of the Medical College of Georgia Foundation Inc. In 1993, he and Betty established the Byron H. Dunn M.D. and Betty Janes Dunn Chair at the Medical College of Georgia in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2003, he received the President's Award, The Vessel of Life, from President Daniel Rahn, M.D. of the Medical College of Georgia. After retiring in 1993, he enjoyed his farm, his vegetable garden and his dogs. He tried to give his patients the best care he could possibly give and studied constantly throughout his career to be sure this care was of the highest quality. He was a dedicated doctor, and a man of the highest integrity who always strived to abide by the ethics of medicine.

Dr. Dunn was preceded in death by parents Mercer L. and Myrtice H. Dunn and brothers Lynwood, Lamar, and Roger. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Betty; sons Byron H. Jr., and his daughter Jessica, Gordon A. and his wife Kimberley E. and their children Christopher, Ashley, Lindsey,and Lauren, and Stuart M. and his wife Kimberly A., and their daughters Erin and Shannon; sister-in-law Francis Dunn of Zebulon; cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visitation was at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, at 6 p.m., Nov. 21. A memorial service was held at Caldwell & Cowan at 2p.m. Nov. 22. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Byron H.
