Vets to rally at Walk of Heroes

The Walk of Heroes Veterans War Memorial in Rockdale has been named one of the local rally sites in Georgia for the national Million Vets March Oct. 13.

Organizers of the national rally at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., are calling on veterans to gather Oct. 13 at 9 a.m. to protest the closing of national memorials to the public, denying access to veterans groups such as Honor Flight trips for World War II veterans.

Local sites have been suggested in each state, including the National Infantry Museum in Columbus and the Veterans War Memorial in Cumming, according to a WordPress blog at http://1mvetmarch.wordpress.com/rally-points/georgia/

WOH board Chairman Tommy Clack said he was not aware how the Conyers memorial was chosen, but he has started receiving hundreds of calls from veterans around the state. He said he tried to contact the blog organizers, but had not had a response as of Thursday evening.

"It’s been individuals from all over. All the way up into Dalton. Everyone said, ‘I’m coming, even if there’s not a program.’"

Clack said at this point there is no agenda or program, but WOH board members will be there to represent the memorial.

Clack has been scrambling to notify county officials about the possible influx of visitors and prepare the grounds ahead of schedule.

Although this is short notice, this does indicate that the public is aware of the Walk of Heroes, Clack said.

"Someone somewhere knows we exist," he said. "It’s a blessing in disguise."
