Crime briefs: One wife too many?

A Covington woman called the Newton County Sheriff’s Office to file a complaint against her husband.

The woman reportedly told deputies that she and her husband had married in 2008. She recently received a Facebook message with a picture of another woman’s marriage license that had her husband’s name on it.

She contacted the Newton County Probate Judge’s Office and allegedly told deputies that the probate office told her that her husband said he was not married and had been married again in April of 2013.

Deputies are investigating to determine if the husband committed bigamy.

Battery charge

Warrants have been issued for 28-year-old Charles Robert Gary on charges of battery under the Family Violence Act.

Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home on Pickens Road. When they arrived they spoke with the victim, who was at a home several houses away from where the incident allegedly occurred.

According to reports, the left side of the victim’s face was swollen and there were lacerations to her face and lip and a large swollen area at the back of her head.

She reportedly told officers that her boyfriend, later identified as Gary, had hit her.

She said the two of them had been drinking earlier in the day and he had become angry with her, hitting her with a closed fist in the face and head. She told officers that Gary was probably still at their home and asleep by then.

However, when deputies arrived at the home, another man there allegedly told them that Gary "took off" because "the police had been called."
