Two arrested on drug charges

Two people were arrested and face drug-related charges after 7 pounds of marijuana was reportedly found in a home last week.

Cortney Morrison, public information officer with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, said the NCSO Special Investigation Unit, along with the U.S. Marshals Service, went to serve a warrant Oct. 1 on Gregory McConnell, 24, at a home on Ga. Highway 81.

Morrison said McConnell had warrants in several jurisdictions in the metro area, including in DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties.

"Upon entry, they observed in plain view in containers almost 7 pounds of marijuana … along with several loaded firearms," Morrison said.

"Once Gregory McConnell was taken into custody on his warrants and the agent saw the marijuana and the firearms, they backed out and they got a search warrant."

Morrison said once officials obtained a search warrant, a search revealed that there were several bags containing cocaine in the home.

McConnell was charged with possession of marijuana felony, possession of a firearm while committing a crime, possession of firearms by a convicted felon, and possession of cocaine felony.

Morrison said Jade Heggins, 24, who also lived in the home, was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of cocaine felony. Morrison said Heggins wasn’t there at the time of the search, but was arrested later.

"Due to the quantities of illegal contraband found in the house, you could not live in that house and not know what was going on. So she was charged as well," Morrison said.

In a separate case, NCSO Investigator Michael Cunningham said a man with active warrants in Newton and Fulton counties was arrested on Salem Road.

Cunningham said NCSO deputies received information about the whereabouts of Willie James Robinson Jr., 21, and made contact with him. In a subsequent vehicle search, deputies discovered a clear bag with suspected Ecstasy, a clear bag of suspected marijuana, and a .40-caliber gun reportedly stolen out of Rockdale County.

Robinson was arrested and charged with possession of firearms by a convicted felon, theft by receiving stolen property, violation of Georgia’s Controlled Substance Act, and possession of marijuana less than one ounce.
