Miracle League gets its wish

/

Members of the Covington Police Department donate a $10,000 check Tuesday to the Newton Recreation Commission Miracle League fund.

The Newton County Recreation Commission received a boost to one of its top projects Tuesday, as the Covington Police Department donated a $10,000 check to the Commission for the development of a special-needs playground at Newton County's Miracle League Field.

The field, whose construction began in 2012, is designed to provide a specially-engineered rubber softball/baseball field for special-needs children. The field would be located at Covington's City Pond Park.

As of August 2013, the project has received $491,107 in general donations since 2009.

Along with the special-needs field and playground, the Miracle League complex would also feature accessory buildings, a concession stand and other recreation baseball fields, if funding allows.

Opening day is projected to happen sometime in 2014.
