Bulldogs' defense thwarts Tar Heels

Hard-nosed defensed helped the Bulldogs to their third win of the season Monday night, as the Bulldogs defeated the Tar Heels 34-6 at Wolverine Field in Division II football action.

Jayson Douglas led the Bulldogs with three touchdowns on the ground totaling over 100 yards, while quarterback Zack Tolleson got into the action with a first-half touchdown pass.

The Tar Heels managed one score in the first half, but the Bulldogs' defense held the Tar Heels scoreless in the second half.

The Bulldogs' offense scored three first-half touchdowns, the first coming less than two minutes into the game from Douglas. On the Bulldogs' opening drive, Douglas ran the ball 35 yards on the Bulldogs' second play of the game, finding the endzone for the game's first score. The Bulldogs converted on the 2-point conversion with a pass from Tolleson to Austin Wilson, giving the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.

The Tar Heels answered the Bulldogs with a score on their second drive of the game, eating up the clock with a 10-minute drive that started from their own 46 yard line. The Tar Heels drove the ball 54 yards on the drive, crossing the goalline on a 3-yard run from Kaleb Jackson. The Tar Heels missed the conversion, trailing 8-6 with 13:27 left in the first half.

The Bulldogs closed the first half with a pair of scores, the first coming on an 18-yard pass from Tolleson to Wilson down the right sideline. Tolleson sailed the pass over the Tar Heels' defense into the arms of Wilson, extending the Bulldogs' lead to 14-6.

Douglas found the enszone for his second score of the day with eight second to go in the first period, bruising his way to a 44-yard touchdown run. The score gave the Bulldogs a 20-6 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, it was all Bulldogs, as the Bulldogs' rushing attack wore down the Tar Heels.

Douglas crossed the goalline for his third and final score of the night with 12:56 to go in the first half, scoring on a 74-yard touchdown run. Malik Goodson rushed his way to the Bulldogs' final score with just over five minutes left in the contest, using a 4-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 34-6 victory after Douglas converted the 2-point conversion.

Other game scores were not available from last week for games played at Turner Lake and Wolverine Field.
