The Newton varsity volleyball team honored seniors Kayla Burns, Ashley Thompson, Ja'lynn Cole, Sierra Fleming, Nikky Adams, Tiandria Cotton and Kristinne Cabane on Senior Night Tuesday against Alcovy.

The Newton varsity volleyball team's senior class went out with a bang Tuesday night at home, defeating county rival Alcovy 3-1 on Senior Night.

The Rams fell behind early 25-21 in the first set, but reeled off three consecutive wins at 25-14, 25-14 and 25-16 to clinch the win.

Newton honored seniors Kayla Burns, Ashley Thompson, Ja'lynn Cole, Sierra Fleming, Nikky Adams, Tiandria Cotton and Kristinne Cabane at the conclusion of the match, capping off the Rams' home victory.

While the seniors may have received the most spotlight off the court, it was junior Abigail Bugg who stole the show on it, recording nine kills, nine service points and four aces in the win. Cabane also added seven kills to the Rams' total, while Burns added five aces from the service line.

Aleisha Lett led the Tigers with three kills and three blocks, while Jessica Morgan added five service points and an ace.

Alcovy took hold of the first set with a 7-2 lead, but the Rams rallied back to cut the Tigers' margin to 10-7. The Tigers' held on to the slim lead for much of the set before using back-to-back Newton  hitting errors to take a commanding 22-14 advantage.

Despite the Rams outscoring Alcovy 7-3 to close the game, the Tigers' early lead was enough, as the Rams were called for a line violation to end the first set 25-21.

The second set saw a role reversal of the first, as Newton took an early lead that it never relinquished. The Rams jumped ahead 7-4 on a Cabane tip-over, and used a kill from Bugg to extend their lead to 16-9.

The Rams ended the set on a 9-5 run, tying the contest at 1-1 overall.

In the third and fourth sets, the Rams again dominated from the outset.

Bugg recorded three kills and an ace in the third set, giving the Rams a 5-2 advantage on her first kill of the set after saving a ball out-of-bounds.

Cotton blocked an Alcovy shot, forcing the Tigers into a hitting error in the middle of the set, pushing the Rams' lead to 10-4.

The Tigers forced the Rams into a 9-9 stretch with a kill from Lett during the run, but a pair of hitting errors over the games' final five points saw the Tigers fall 25-14 in the third set.

In the fourth and final set, the Rams doubled up the Tigers 12-6 out of the gate. Bugg, Cabane and Cole recorded kills during the 6-point run.

The Tigers trimmed Newton's lead to 13-5 on a Lett ace, but the Rams' offense proved too much down the stretch, as Bugg recorded three kills during the Rams' final six points to earn a 25-16 game-clinching win.
