Tide takes victory over Longhorns

The Newton County Recreation Commission Division II Tide earned a 19-6 win over the Longhorns Monday night at Wolverine Field.

The Longhorns scored the game's first touchdown of the night on a 1-yard run from Brayden Downs, but the Tide rolled to 19 unanswered points to secure the win.

The Longhorns and the Tide entered halftime tied 6-6 after the Tide evened the game on a 65-yard touchdown reception. Tide quarterback Cole Shannon connected with receiver Cameron Mobley for the game-tying score.

The Tide then scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half, the first coming on a 3-yard touchdown run from Mobley with 13:30 left in the game.

The Tide scored the game's final touchdown with 6:27 remaining in the contest, finishing in the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run by Elijah Character. The Tide converted the extra point on a pass from Shannon to Ryan Spikes.

In other Recreation Commission action this week, the Tigers defeated the Jackets 30-12 and the Ducks defeated the Bulldogs 34-6 in Division III action on Sept. 3.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, the LSU Tigers defeated the Auburn Tigers 18-12 in Division II action, while the Ducks shut out the Longhorns 12-0.

The Hurricanes earned a 21-7 win over the Buckeyes in Division II play on Sept. 5, while the Jackets earned their first win of the season with a 32-6 victory over the LSU Tigers.

Saturday rounded out football action for the week with five total games at Wolverine Field.

The Gators shut out the Tar Heels 41-0 in the opening game of the morning, while the Tide squeaked out a 33-31 win over the Bulldogs.

The Hurricanes rounded out Division II action with a 26-0 victory over the Auburn Tigers.

The Buckeyes picked up a 44-21 win over the Ducks in Division III play, and the Jackets closed the day with a 27-20 win over the Bulldogs.

Scores were not available from last week for games played at Turner Lake.

Recreation Commission football will be featured at both Turner Lake and Wolverine Field this week, with game scheduled for tonight, Thursday and Saturday.
