Alcovy softball ready to defend title

With the softball season already underway, the Alcovy Tigers hope the same fortunes that favored them a year ago will once again show themselves in 2013.

With the team currently sitting at 4-2 overall, Alcovy head coach Russell Brock said that his program is eager to continue its winning ways after the program captured the Region 2-AAAAAA title a year ago, even if it means relying on a young, upstart group to take the title.

"We’re young; we only have three seniors, but they had an excellent year last year," Brock said.

"We're looking to go a little further and improve upon what we did last year. The seniors have done a good job. We have forced them into a (leadership) role.

"It’s something that I believe in and they’ve done a good job with that responsibility."

Morgan Beshears, Waneshia Morris and Chelsie Nolley are the three seniors that Brock will rely upon this year. If success is up to the seniors, Alcovy fans can go ahead and schedule a deep playoff run on their calendars.

"I expect us to win region this season and to make it past the second round of state," said Beshears, who is verbally committed to North Georgia.

The Tigers already earned a victory over rival Newton this season and expect the winning to continue thanks to the program's hard work.

"Every region game is important because there are so few," Brock said. "We don’t play many, so every one of them matters. Every one is contributing and helping us to get better. It’s a team concept that is helping us progress."

For Nolley, the Tigers leftfielder, the team bond that Alcovy has created thus far into the season seems to be paying dividends.

"With the great group of girls we have left here at Alcovy, I expect great things to happen this year," she said.

"There's no doubt in my mind that we will go far."

Alcovy returns to action next Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 5 p.m. against Ola, with the junior varsity game to follow at 6:30 p.m.
