Newton election results certified

With 24 out of 24 precincts reporting, the election results have now been certified by the Newton County Board of Elections.

The only county race that had a chance of changing because of close voter margins - the sheriff's race - has not changed. Lt. Ezell Brown remains the sheriff-elect.

Brown's Republican opponent, Lt. Bill Watterson said he will not be asking for a recount. Watterson is the only candidate who could have asked for a recount because of the close voter margin. The final vote between the two men came down to 62 votes.

"We're just going to let it stand as it is and move forward," Watterson said. "I'm looking forward to seeing what [Sheriff-elect] Brown is going to do and am looking forward to working with him.

There were only eight votes in the last precinct, which is made up of provisional ballots. A total of 41,574 votes were cast in the election with registered voter turnout of 76.32 percent.
