School enrollment increases

Enrollment has increased slightly from the last school year in Newton County schools.

Newton County School System officials reported at a recent Board of Education work session that 19,333 students were enrolled in county schools as of Aug. 13.

In May, 19,056 students were enrolled. At the start of the 2012-13 school year, the school system had 18,984 students enrolled in its schools.

According to the Aug. 13 tally, there are 9,538 students are enrolled in the system’s 13 elementary schools and Newton County Theme School at Ficquett. NCTS added eighth grade this year, and has an enrollment of 914 students, with 68 of those students enrolled in eighth grade.

Flint Hill Elementary continues to have the highest enrollment among the county’s elementary schools, with 1,180 students.

However, Flint Hill’s enrollment is down from 1,206 students in May.

There are 4,492 students enrolled in the school system’s five middle schools. Indian Creek has the highest middle-school enrollment with 1,047 students, an increase from the 1,026 students attending the school in May.

In the school system’s three high schools, a total of 5,211 students are enrolled.

Newton High has the highest high school and overall school enrollment in the NCSS, with 2,060 students attending classes in its new building. Newton High had 1,762 students enrolled in May.

At Ombudsman, the school system’s alternative school for middle- and high-school students, 92 students were enrolled as of Aug. 13, but school system officials said intakes are continuing. In May, Ombudsman had 208 students.

Newton College and Career Academy has a total of 786 students enrolled. A ninth grade STEM academy program that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and math was opened at NCCA this year, and has 57 students enrolled.

At NCCA, there are 22 tenth-graders, 271 students in 11th grade; 211 students in 12th grade; and 25 students are enrolled in the school’s pre-kindergarten program.

No enrollment numbers were reported for Challenge Charter Academy, a public school independent of the Newton County School System.

The Academy closed at the end of the 2012-13 school year. CCA’s enrollment was at 88 students in May.
