Arrest made in NCSO phone scam

/

Rasheen Jones

An arrest has been made in connection with a July telephone scam in which a man claiming to be a deputy was contacting Newton County citizens and telling them they had been caught on camera speeding and needed to pay a fine.

Rasheen Jones, 33, was arrested Tuesday without incident.

The fraudulent fine was typically a few hundred dollars, authorities said, and citizens contacted were advised to put the money on a Green Dot prepaid debit card, and the male would call back to get the account number off the card.

After learning that one victim did purchase the Green Dot and give account information to the caller, The Criminal Investigation Division of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office was able to determine that the money from the Green Dot card was in turn transferred to a Rush prepaid debit card registered in Jones’ name.

Investigators were able to obtain video evidence of Jones using the Rush card at a Walmart in Union City.

The case remains active.
