Miracle League car show coming

The Fourth Annual Car and Bike Show will be Aug. 3 at Turner Lake Recreation Complex in Covington. The project is coordinated by Commissioner Lanier Sims.

Funds raised by the show will be used for the new Miracle League Complex under construction at City Pond Park in Covington. The complex is scheduled to be finished by next April.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., owners of cars and bikes are invited to come out and enter their vehicles for a chance to win an award. Registration is $20 on the day of the show, and awards will be given to the top 50 vehicles entered. Awards also will be given to the best in 10 categories, which include Ford, Chevy, Mopar, Truck, Original, Custom, Late Model, Best of Show, Best Bike and Director’s Pick of Show.

For spectators, admission is free; concessions and food will be available for purchase.

Some 100-150 vehicles are expected to participate, and show coordinators are hoping to bring in around $3,000-$4,000.

The complex is a $2-million project, and $1.5 million was paid for with SPLOST dollars.

"We’re using inmate labor for building, which is free, but construction has been slowed down because of all the rain we’ve had this year. We’re still on track for April, though," said Tamara Richardson, a consultant for the Miracle League.

Construction should be primarily completed by the end of the year, and then landscaping and other details will be finalized to prepare for the spring opening.
