Hattie J. Henderson

Young Funeral Home

Mrs. Hattie J. Henderson departed this earthly life on July 2. She was born in Newton County on Nov. 9, 1934 to Thomas and Olden Kimball. She was the second of four children, of which, brother Joseph Kimball, preceded her in death. She attended and graduated from Washington Street School where she met the love of her life in Prentist L. Henderson Sr. They were joined in holy matrimony on Feb. 8, 1953, and to this union, 10 children were born and one adopted. Three of her children preceded her in death, one daughter at birth, Susan, and Tony.

At an early age, Mrs. Henderson joined the Saint Paul AME Church in Covington. However, soon after marriage, she and husband moved their membership to Grace United Methodist, becoming a very devoted member. Her passions were singing in the church choir, dancing, cooking, and the Atlanta Braves!

She worked at Porterdale Mill and Newton County Hospital. Later, despite raising nine children, she attended DeKalb College and obtained her certification to become a license practical nurse. Afterward, she continued working at Newton County Medical Center for another 27 years as a LPN.

Additionally, Mrs. Henderson was very loyal to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She leaves behind to cherish her memories her children Pamela (Willie) Williams, Prentist L. (Elaine) Henderson Jr., Cathy Henderson, Cynthia (Dwight) Robinson, Danny (Brent) Henderson, Marsha (Bruce) Thomas, Lorenza Henderson, and Tyrone (Shelia) Phillips; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister Mary Addie Kimball; brother Thomas (Connais) Kimball; brother-in-law Lorenza (Johnnie) Henderson; sisters-in-law Larue Henderson, Dorthea Henderson, Lillie Hicks, Julia Kimball, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m., on Friday, July 5, at the funeral home.

Cortege will assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. Funeral services for Mrs. Hattie J. Henderson will be held at noon, Saturday, July 6, at Grace United Methodist Church in Covington, with the Rev. Matt Murphy as pastor and the Rev. Arundel Hope as eulogist. Interment will follow at Westside Cemetery.
