Chandler Schmalz

Mr. Alfred Chandler Schmalz, 88, passed away June 23 in Conyers. Born in Dedham, Mass., he was preceded in death by his parents Edith Young and Alfred Schmalz, his sister Nancy Schmalz Barlow, and his first wife Jane Isaac Schmalz.

Mr. Chandler received his bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College, his master’s degree from Middlebury College where he was an associate professor, and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

He published his findings as the “Studies in the Phenothiazine Series” and has been published in Journals of Chemical and Organic Chemistry. At Bolles Military Academy in Jacksonville, Fla., he taught chemistry and coached baseball.

He then worked as a research chemist for 36 years at Hercules Inc., patenting many new products in the areas of man-made fibers and paper-making chemistry which continue to be produced today.

He was an avid Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox and Bruins fan.

He enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Azalea Society for many years.

He was an active member in the Episcopal and later the Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years Gail Hopkins Schmalz; sons William Drew Schmalz and wife Jacqueline, Robert Chandler Schmalz and Andreas Pitsilledes; stepsons Gregory Graham Cowan and wife Barbara, Mark Randal Cowan and wife Betsy; stepdaughter Claudia Cowan Thompson and husband Bill; grandchildren Alexander, Andreas, David, Jessica, Graham, Elliot, Kaci, Allen, Mary and Sarah.
