Three arrested, one sought in shooting

Three men have been arrested, and a warrant is outstanding for a fourth in a May shooting in the Silos subdivision.

Following a nearly month-long investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Andrew Burrell, Joe Crosby Jr., and Joe Crosby III have all been arrested. Warrants are outstanding for Terence Elliot Benjamin.

Charges against the four men stem from May 3, when a 20-year-old man was shot. According to NCSO Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison, deputies were called to the Silos subdivision on a report of shots being fired.

While they were in the area, they were told of a possible stolen auto at a home on Middleton Drive. When they arrived at the house, they saw a vehicle outside running, with damage to the radiator.

A female approached the deputies and said she had come to the residence to visit when the victim showed up, covered in blood and reportedly saying he had been shot in the heart and needed a ride to the hospital.

The victim had left the home moments earlier, but once he turned onto Spring Lake Terrace, shots rang out. Minutes later, the victim arrived at the home seeking help.

Thursday morning, around 6 a.m., investigators served Crosby Jr., 45, and Burrell, 26, with search and arrest warrants at their homes on Middleton Drive and Spring Lake Terrace.

Morrison said that as deputies and investigators worked at the homes, neighbors from the Silos continued to drive past the two homes and thank law enforcement officers for making the arrests, saying they didn’t want the suspects in their neighborhood.

"They asked for help and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office provided it," said Morrison. "This is a direct result of the community and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office getting involved."

Burrell and Crosby Jr., were both charged with aggravated battery, criminal trespassing, reckless conduct and discharge of firearms on or near a public highway.

Crosby III, 25, was arrested and charged with party to a crime of aggravated battery.

Deputies are still searching for Benjamin, 24, on charges of party to a crime of aggravated battery.

Morrison said that Benjamin had shoulder-length dreadlocks the last time he was seen.
