The start of summer fun

The end of school and the arrival of Memorial Day aren’t the only signs that summer has arrived; there are also the various summer camps and leagues offered by recreation departments and organizations around Newton County.

The Covington Y started things off with its pool opening Saturday, as well as today from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Tuesday, practices begin for the Y’s competitive swim team, open to ages 5-18. Practices will be held Monday through Friday, 7 p.m. for ages 5-10, and 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., for ages 10-18. Additional practices for all ages are available from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

Meets will be held Monday and Thursday nights at 6 p.m. from June 10-24 at Conyers’ subdivision pools with the championship meet June 29 at Johnson Park.

For those less competitive swimmers, the Y offers swim lessons for ages 6 months to 12 years.

The first session runs from May 28 through June 7, followed by another June 10-21, another June 24-July5, another July 8-19 and the fifth and final session July 22-Aug. 1.

Lessons are $75 per session with a $35 annual program membership required. All sessions are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, lasting 20 minutes for 6-36 months and 55 minutes for 3-12 years.

The Y also offers summer activity on land, with summer T-ball and coach pitch baseball and youth flag football. Both activities are open to ages 4-13 with registration deadlines today and practices beginning the week of June 10. Games are Tuesday and Thursday evenings from June 27-July 25. Cost is $65 for facility members and $75 for program members with uniforms included.

The Y also offers a Summer Day Camp starting Tuesday and lasting through Aug. 1 for ages 5-12. The program offers swimming every day, field trip or special events every week, organized sports, arts and crafts, unique themes each week and a safe, supportive environment promoting fun and growth.

Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with pre- and post-camp care from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., and 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at no additional cost. Program fees are $90 per week for facility members, $100 per week for program members with $35 registration fee per family and a $15 T-shirt fee per child.

The Newton County Recreation Commission is also open for camps this summer, beginning with its football and cheerleading camp for ages 5-12. Registration runs from June 3 through July 12 at a cost of $135 for football players ages 5-6, $150 for football players ages 7-12 and $150 for cheerleaders age 5-12.

The Jimmy Wright Memorial Basketball Summer Camp begins June 17, lasting through June 21, at Turner Lake Gym from 8 a.m. to noon for ages 6-12. Cost is $65 per child.

Softball and baseball registration for the fall season is July 8-Aug. 2 for ages 5-14 at a cost of $85 per child.
