Alcovy High School celebrated the signing of two student athletes Wednesday, both former Tigers’ basketball players, and one a future collegiate hoopster and another a future collegiate softball player.

Lakeiyah Sorrells played both softball and basketball at Alcovy, and chose to continue to stay on the diamond at West Georgia Technical College.

Sorrells starred for the Region 2-AAAAAA champion Alcovy softball team at shortstop and in the heart of the Tigers’ batting order. Sorrells began playing softball when she was 7 years old, and is content with continuing her love affair with the sports.

She will pursue a sports medicine degree while at West Georgia Tech, located near Carrollton.

“It’s what I have always wanted to do since I was a child,” Sorrells said.

Along with her desired sport and major, Sorrells said the college is also a good fit for its location.

“It isn’t far from home, and I think it’s a perfect fit for me,” Sorrells said.

Sorrells’ Alcovy basketball teammate Kacilyn Palo will also play sports at a secondary institution, suiting up for the Andrew College basketball team.

“At first, I didn’t like it because it was in the middle of nowhere,” Palo said. “But then I thought of myself being there, gave it a chance and loved the coaches and the environment.”

Palo was a part of the Tigers’ basketball team which reached the 2012 Class AAAA final four and the 2013 Region 2-AAAAAA championship squad.

At Andrew College, located in Cuthbert, Palo will study psychology, and continue to improve under basketball coach Samantha Paradise, who is noted for her work with guards.

Both players formed a strong 2013 class for Alcovy sports, and its record-setting girls’ basketball program.
“It was amazing,” Palo said.
