Al Alessandri

 

Mr. Al Alessandri, 91, of McDonough, passed away May 1. He was born on Jan. 23, 1922, in Springfield, Mass. Alessandri was a World War II veteran who served in France, India and China from 1942–1946. After a long career as a tool design engineer with Lithonia Lighting, he retired in 1989.

He was a talented musician who trained to be a concert violinist in his younger years. Bass and piano were his instruments of choice. Alessandri played bass in many bands on the East Coast including Emma Kelley’s Statesboro Band and more recently the Henry County Moose Lodge. His hobbies included bowling and golf. He coached the Glenwood Junior League from 1965¬-1982 and instilled a love for the sport in many young people. Alessandri was instrumental in organizing the Lithonia Lighting Golf League and after retirement was a starter-ranger at several golf courses including Lake Dow and Southerness.

Alessandri is survived by his wife Mary Smith Alessandri; daughter Lisa (Barry) Callahan of Springfield, Va., and Marti Alessandri (John) of St. Petersburg, Fla.; grandsons Sean Callahan of Springfield, Va., and Ryan Callahan of Santa Fe, N.M.; sisters-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews throughout the country.

A funeral service for Mr. Alessandri will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5 in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home, 1745 Zack Hinton Parkway S., McDonough. Family will receive friends at the funeral home tomorrow, May 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. A reception will follow the service at the residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions are asked to be made to Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2900 Salem Road SE, Conyers, GA 30013 or to a charity of your choice.
