NFL Draft experts analyze McCray

Newton High School Class of 2009 graduate Demetrius McCray has his sights set on the National Football League and that path starts Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the 2013 NFL Draft.

The former Appalachian State cornerback is projected to get drafted in the fifth round of this year’s draft between picks 155-168, according to nfldraftscout.com.

If McCray is selected at the 155th pick in the draft, as proplayersinsiders.com thinks he will be, he would go to the Seattle Seahawks. According to ourlads.com, the Atlanta Falcons are possibly thinking of selecting McCray with their 163th pick. The Falcons are in need of a cornerback and they feel that McCray could be the answer.

If McCray falls to the seventh round, expect the New Orleans Saints to possibly make a move for him. If he is not a part of a trade with a current Saints player, it is very likely McCray could end up in New Orleans according to Will Osgood of bleacherreport.com.

If McCray is still on the board when the Redskins’ 162th pick comes up, it is very likely they will select him according to ourlads.com. McCray has not worked out for any NFL teams, but at the draft combine, McCray ran a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash and the Seattle Seahawks are keeping a focused eye on him according to proplayersinders.com.

McCray attends Appalachian State University and in his final season with the Mountaineers, he tallied 55 tackles, four pass break ups and four interceptions. In his high school senior year, McCray was named Newton County Athlete of the Year.

He played quarterback and defensive back and contributed 1,600 yards of total offense, seven interceptions, seven pass break ups, 40 tackles and a forced fumble. In 2011, McCray earned fourth-team All-America recognition from Phil Steele Publications according to NFL.com.

He was named first-team All-Southern Conference by the league’s coaches and media according to NFL.com.

Even if McCray is not drafted, he will more than likely receive a free agent contract from an NFL team so he will still get to experience the NFL experience. NFL.com lists McCray at 6-foot-1, 187 pounds with as a 33 7/8-inch arm span, and 9 ¼-inch hands.
