Rams headed to playoffs

Newton clinched a spot in the Class AAAAAA playoffs Tuesday, knocking off Morrow 12-2 on senior night.

After Morrow took an early first-inning lead, Newton took over in the bottom of the first, running away with the contest, originally scheduled for Friday but postponed due to inclement weather.

“It feels great. This win helped put us in the state playoffs, which is something we haven’t done since 2009,” said Newton coach Vincent Byams. “So, this feels great.”

After Kenny Glover gave up a run in the top of the first inning, Newton scored eight of its own in the bottom half.
Allen Bowen opened with a two-run single, followed by the same thing from Oliver Astin three batters later. After Astin, Levi Langford drove in two more runs on a triple, and the Rams finished the frame out with two more runs.
Shawn Guckenburger knocked in a run on a double as part of a four-run third inning by Newton.

In the fourth, Glover surrendered his last run on a single by the Mustangs’ Keenan Davis that included three errors by the Rams that scored Jonathon Micnite.
Glover would pitch all five innings only giving up four hits, two runs and delivering eight strikeouts gaining a win for the Rams.

“Kenny has been good all year, pretty much throwing strikes getting outs for us,” Byams said. “The defense has been making been plays and just really good for him the guys behind him.”

Offensively, Allen Bowen went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI.

“He’s been helping us since he got back from injury,” Byams said. “He’s been swinging a hot bat and he’s pretty much been the nucleus for our offense since he’s been back, major bat in the lineup just playing lights out.”

The Rams honored senior right fielder Jeremy Laguins before the game, and are currently in third place in Region 2-AAAAAA, and will play Newnan in the first round of the state playoffs.
