The Alcovy boys’ golf team is not only Region 2-AAAAAA champions, but it is also headed to the state tournament.

The Tigers shot a team score of 325, good enough to win and qualify them for the May 20 event in Tifton.

All six of Alcovy’s golfers finished under 88, with Zachary Floyd tying for the boys’ low medalist. Floyd shot a 72, along with Luella’s Devon White to lead the pack.

Alcovy’s Jess Nelson and Andrew Cochran each shot an 84, followed by Wesley Keaton with an 85, Matt Lovell with an 86 and Hunter Clark with an 87.

“I’m real pleased with the guys,” Alcovy coach Chris Newsham said. “We go to state and we’ll see how we do there.”
Luella came in second with a team score of 47, followed by Rockdale with 384, Druid Hills with 389, Lovejoy with 424 and Newton rounding out the six-team field with 450.

Tyler Bystrom was the Rams’ low scorer with 103, followed by Riley Dameron with 110, Thomas Williamson with 114, Brendan Brown with 123, Aaron Hickson with 124 and Brady Shivers with 129.

The Tigers had to rally after starting out slowly Tuesday morning, before players started sinking their shots.
While the boys were staging a comeback, the girls’ team was also finishing as the region’s low scorers with a combined 303.

Just three girls’ teams competed in the region tournament with Luella scoring a 307 and Newton 324.

Alcovy’s Kelsey Knight was low medalist with a score of 94 to help propel the Lady Tigers to sectionals.

“My drives and irons were good, but I lost a bunch of my strokes in putting,” Knight said.

They were three shots short of making it to state, so the Lady Tigers will have to compete in the sectional tournament at the Country Club of Roswell May 20.

“They can definitely go there and qualify for state if they play well,” Newsham said.

The Lady Tigers will need continued improvement from all their golfers, as Emily Moore shot 102, followed by Kaitlyn Doering and Sharlie Harrell each with 107.

Logan Malcom shot a 97 to lead Newton, as Jade Woods had 108, Ashton McKinnon 119 and Paris Little 126.
