Family feud leads to kidnapping charges

A woman and child were found safe in Decatur after reportedly being kidnapped by the woman’s abusive husband.

Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were called to a family fight Sunday evening.

When they arrived, they spoke with a woman who said her sister had been staying with the woman to get away from her sister’s abusive husband, 26-year-old Maurice Emanual McHenry.

The woman reportedly told officers that McHenry came to her home and she went to the door to tell him to leave, which is when he forced his way inside.

McHenry and the woman got into a verbal altercation which turned physical when he attempted to get at his wife and choked, scratched and pulled the woman’s hair, according to Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison.
McHenry was able to overpower the woman, and then he allegedly pulled his wife out the front door as she fought him.

He managed to get his wife and one of the children into the vehicle with him and left.

He was later found in Decatur and arrested.

He was brought back to Newton County and charged with kidnapping, cruelty to children in the third degree, interference with custody and battery.

Can you hear me now?
Officers with the Covington Police Department were dispatched to a home on Blackwell Street Sunday to speak with a woman about an assault that reportedly occurred the day before.

The woman reportedly told police she’d been having trouble with her aunt Alice Smith and her children, Jalisha Smith and two other juvenile males.

She said she approached her aunt on Sunday because she believed one of the juvenile males had stolen a cellphone.

She told officers that Smith became “irate” and that she “grabbed a large butcher knife and raised it up at her as if she was going to stab her with it.”

The victim also allegedly told officers that Smith was saying that she was going to kill her while she had the knife raised.

She then had her three kids jump on her, and then Smith grabbed her by the cheek “by placing her fingers in her mouth and grasping the inside and outside of her cheek.”

Reports also indicate that one of the juvenile males was punching her and that Jalisha Smith grabbed the victim’s juvenile daughter when she tried to stop the attack on her mother [the victim].

Officers noted scratches on the woman’s throat and a large sore inside her mouth that she said came from when Smith had grabbed her.

She was advised of the warrant procedure and pictures of her injuries were taken.
