Alcovy tennis finishes 2nd in region

Alcovy boys’ tennis finished second in Region 2-AAAAAA, garnering the right to host a state playoff match.

The Tigers began the region tournament with a 3-0 victory over Morrow, before facing Luella three hours later. The victory also put Alcovy in the state playoffs for the first time since facing Harris County four years ago.

The Tigers swept in both singles and doubles with the No. 2 doubles team of Jordan Hexom and Okon Godwin winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 against Morrow. John Gammans won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, Clayton Anderson won at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-2 and Hunter Aycox in No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0. Stefen Kirk and Holden Miller were Alcovy’s other winners in No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

Alcovy, once again, was successful in the semifinals, defeating Luella 3-2 to earn a spot in the 2-AAAAAA championship and get a top two seed in the state playoffs.

Anderson had the biggest match of the second round, winning in three sets, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-5, which lasted over three hours. Gammans won again in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3 and Hexom/Godwin were the Tigers only doubles winners, 6-0, 6-1.

Rockdale beat Alcovy for the Region 2-AAAAAA championship, 3-0 but the Tigers accomplished more than they had in any previous region tournament. It’s the highest-placed finish for Alcovy in a region tournament, and the first time it will host a playoff game. The Bulldogs won all three singles matches in straight sets to set the tone.

The Alcovy girls’ tennis team finished fourth in the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament and will be on the road for the first round of the state tournament.
