Johnson stars in decathalon for Troy

Track
Sam Johnson, Eastside – Johnson finished fourth out of nine contestants, with a score of 6,400 points in the UGA Invitational Decathalon on Thursday and Friday.

It was a career high for the Troy University sophomore, the fourth-highest finish in school history, and good enough to rank him second in the Sunbelt Conference.

Softball
Markea Sheppard, Newton – Sheppard went 7 for 16 last week, hitting a home run, driving in five runs and scoring five more for the Claflin last week. The Lady Panthers begin the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Thursday as the No. 2 seed in the east, taking on the winners of Tuskegee and Benedict at 4 p.m. at the Gerald Matthews Sports Complex in Hampton.

Taylor Causey, Eastside – Causey pitched one shutout inning as the NAIA No. 16 ranked Brenau Golden Tigers fell to No. 12 William Carey 6-1, splitting the doubleheader Saturday. Brenau split another double header against a ranked opponent, meeting No. 10 Belhaven Sunday.

Baseball
Keith Buckhault, Eastside – Buckhault had one hit as Cleveland State Community College fell to Walters State Community College 8-4 Saturday.

Friday, also against Walters State, Buckhault led off, getting a hit on a double in an 8-1 loss.

It was the first of three straight losses, all to Walters State for the Cougars, which were fresh off a streak of seven straight victories.

Soccer
Former Eastside soccer teammates Ashton Ziadie and Tara Harrison met on the pitch at the collegiate level Saturday during Columbus State’s spring soccer friendlies.

Currently the only former Eastside Lady Eagles playing in college, Ziadie, now a Columbus State Cougar, and Harrison, a LaGrange College Panther, met on opposite sides of the pitch for the first time ever.

Ziadie played on defense and at midfield during the tournament while Harrison saw action as a midfielder, defender and forward during the games.

The girls found time to get together between matches to catch-up and wish each other well.
