Tournament to benefit disaster relief

/

The Stone Mountain Baptist Association will host a Disaster Relief Benefit Golf Tournament Monday, April 15 at the Highland Golf Club, 2271 Flat Shoals Road, Conyers.

The goal is to raise funds for the association so it can provide food needed during serious disasters all over the world.

The tournament begins at 9 a.m. and cost $65 per person or $260 per team, with all gifts being tax deductible.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and includes the greens fee, cart fee and a BBQ lunch. Prizes will be awarded for the top-three finishing teams.

The association is responsible for providing great amounts of food during a disaster when, in most cases, no other food is available and it rely solely on donations from the community.

"We have to carry 15,000 meals because when we get there, no grocery stores are open," said Darrel King, mission project coordinator of the Stone Mountain Baptist Association. "We have to take it with us. We have to be prepared at any time."

The association, which began in 1839 as the Rock Mountain Baptist Association, now includes more than 90 churches and as well as missions worshiping in 11 different languages.

The churches within the association continually work together, attempting to spread the gospel in a family-like harmony.

"It’s like a family, working together; that’s what families do," King said.

They have aided in disasters such as hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, the 9/11 attack in NYC, tornado and flood aftermath and so much more.

Additionally, the units annually work together in Panama with Lifeway Christian Ministries in hopes of reaching college students while they are on their spring break. The students meet together on the beach, enjoy a pancake breakfast and listen as Christian college students from the Baptist Collegiate Ministries share Christ.
