Just a Thought

Guard your heart

We spend billions of dollars as a nation every year on physical health and fitness.

Countless hours are committed to the cause as well. I wonder how that compares to the commitment of our spiritual health.

We do know we have “two” hearts right?

There is our physical heart and there is our spiritual heart. It is the second one Proverbs mentions more than 60 times.

This is the heart that God looks upon (1 Samuel 16:7).

This heart is what determines my motives, feelings, affections and desires as well as my will, aims, principles and thoughts.

While it is so important that I care for my physical heart, it is clear I must put a greater emphasis on my spiritual heart as well. So, how does one do this?

First, I must watch my thoughts (Proverbs 23:7a).

Second, I have to watch my speech. My speech not only reveals my heart, but it also plants thoughts into other’s hearts (Proverbs 18:21a; Js. 3:5b6b).

Third, I have to watch how I spend my money (that’s right — priorities reveal a partial prognosis of the heart’s condition) (Luke 12:34).

Taking care of our heart is a good and wise thing to do — both of them.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23.
