Covington residents Donna McDaniel and Bill Zancocchio cross the finish line of the 5K from last year's race.

This is just a friendly reminder about this Saturday's Cheerios Challenge to make sure everyone's ready for the big races. First of all, registration is ongoing and will be open through the morning of the race. Secondly, the events will be held at the Y on Newton Drive with the 10K race starting at 7:30 a.m., the 1-mile Fun Run/Walk following at 9 a.m. and the 5K anchoring the event at 9:30 a.m.

Original Story: The Covington Y is preparing for the 12th annual Covington Cheerios Challenge Saturday, April 20. The race will include a 10K/5K Road Race and a 1-mile Fun Run/Walk. The events will be held at the Y on Newton Drive. The 10K race begins at 7:30 a.m. The 1-mile Fun Run/Walk will be at 9 a.m., and the 5K at 9:30 a.m.

This Covington Cheerios Challenge is a USATF Certified — AJC Peachtree Road Race Qualifier. This is the 12th year that the Y has worked in partnership with General Mills and other local businesses to create this community event.

"Participation in this event has grown tremendously in these 11 years" said Kacie Brown, the Y’s membership director.

"It is a exciting day for the Y and for our community," said Brown. "In 2012, we had a record setting turn out of runners and walkers and are expecting even more participants in 2013. We appreciate the hard work of our 103 volunteers who come out to make this event possible. The excitement and support around the Covington Cheerios Challenge is contagious.

"We are also excited to announce that the Cheerios No. 31 Race Car will be at our event this year which will be a great addition."

The Cheerios Challenge is a part of the Y’s annual Healthy Kid’s Day Celebration. For more information, call the Y at 770-787-3908 or visit the Y’s website at
