Morgan Edelman set a precedent Tuesday afternoon.

The Alcovy senior became the first girls’ soccer player from her school to sign a soccer scholarship, when she inked a deal with Piedmont College.

“We’re a young program and she’s been one of the first really good players to come through,” Alcovy coach Phillip Davidson said. “We kind of knew when she got into ninth grade that she’ll be playing at the next level.”

Since Edelman arrived on Alcovy’s varsity soccer team in ninth grade she has been one of the Lady Tigers strongest players in the center of both its offense and defense. In her first year the Lady Tigers made it to the state playoffs, and a year ago she scored 15 goals.

“She’s meant a lot to us,” Davidson said. “She’s worked hard every game, and she makes the girls around her better. She’s been a part of a lot of our success and we’ve done real well since she’s been here.”

Edelman will look to carry on that success to a strong Division II program, in the Lions. The Peidmont College girls’ soccer team, located in Demorest, just north of Mount Airy, finished 13-6-1 last year and lost its conference championship 1-0. Piedmont College has been under the tutelage of head soccer coach Stephen Andrew for the last five years, with his worst season being 13-7.

Edelman will look to be a big part of continuing the Lions’ success.

“I think she’ll do well,” Davidson said. “She’s real coachable, works hard and plays hard. She’s able to play a physical game and a finesse game. She makes good decisions with the ball, so she’ll do well at the next level.”

Davidson also hopes Edelman will put Alcovy at the next level as far as attracting the attention of more college coaches singing Alcovy’s next college player, and many more.

“I’m hoping she’ll be an inspiration for them to kind of start looking and maybe we’ll have some more sign.”
