Applaud our schools

Our schools often get a bad rap, so we always make sure to praise them to the rooftops when they succeed. Despite what some might say, this happens more often than not. They succeed in small ways every day, they open their doors. When a child begins to recognize words for the first time and takes that leap into reading, when a student suddenly, with the help of a dedicated teacher, understands that tricky math problem — these are the small successes that are seldom lauded.

But when all three of our high schools are named Advanced Placement honor schools, it’s something that should be celebrated by all of us. Newton, Eastside and Alcovy high schools all earned the distinction in the AP science, technology, engineering and math category, and Alcovy High School was one of only 42 in the state to earn distinction in the AP Access and Support Schools category.

So join us here at The Covington News in congratulating our high schools, their students and their employees for a job very well done.
