Recycle those flip flops!

If you’re like me, you have multiple pairs of flip flops and in all shades of colors. And why wouldn’t you? Especially since Old Navy has them for $3.50 a pair or even better, two for $5.

Earth Day falls on Monday, April 22, this year, and Old Navy has partnered up with trash-to-treasure eco company TerraCycle to turn old, used, or broken flip flops into material for playgrounds.

TerraCycle was founded in 2001 and has since become one of the fastest growing green companies in the world. According to TerraCycle’s website, their purpose is to eliminate the idea of waste by recycling one man’s trash into another man’s treasure. Started by 20-year-old Princeton University freshman Tom Szaky in 2001, TerraCycle has diverted billions of units of waste by turning them into different recycled products with more than 20 million people in 20 countries participating worldwide.

While you cannot bring your flip flops to any Old Navy location like in previous years, collecting pairs of flip flops or even single flops and shipping them to TerraCycle is super easy. Postage is paid for by TerraCycle and only requires you to print out the pre-paid shipping label from TerraCycle.com and bring in your box to the nearest UPS location.

Besides helping Mother Earth by diverting waste from the landfills and doing your green deed for Earth Day, for every shipment of about 10 pairs of flip flops, or 20 individual flip flops (approximately 8 pounds), Old Navy will send you a coupon for a free pair of flip flops as well as additional, exclusive coupons to shop at Old Navy stores or OldNavy.com.

So whether your flops are worn from sun, sand or surf, gather them up and recycle them for a good cause. And tell a friend. While you will be rewarded with coupons from Old Navy, the flip flop brigade actually accepts rubber flip flops of all brands. Stop by The Covington News and drop off your old flip flops or to start your own brigade, visit terracycle.com/en-US/brigades/oldnavy.html.
